Since its inception in 2002, Ron Silliman’s weblog has become one of the most widely read and influential locations for discussion of contemporary poetry and poetics. His near-daily analysis of historic and current writing often spurs intense debate. This work is only one extension of Silliman’s long-term editorial and critical commitment. He edited In the American Tree (National Poetry Foundation, 1986), an important anthology of language poetry, and between 1979 and 2004, wrote a single poem entitled The Alphabet. Volumes from that project have included VOG, Jones, Lit, N/O, Paradise, ®, Toner, What and Xing. Charles Bernstein says of Silliman’s most recent book, Under Albany (Salt, 2004), “This constructivist memoir provides an exquisitely rich exploration of the relation of context to reference, subtext to meaning, back story to presented experience, and composition to poetics." Silliman works as a market analyst in the computer industry.

about prelinger on prelinger
This Corridor seeks to
illuminate the Prelinger Library, a private research library open to the public with collections encompassing some 50,000 books, periodical volumes and printed ephemera. The Library is linked to the Prelinger Archive, a collection of ephemeral films that are a key creative resource to artists of the Illuminated Corridor, and serve as a touchstone for the broader community of film, sound and bricolage artists.
The Corridor will take place during the Library's traditional Wednesday Open House evening hours, where you are invited to lose yourself in the stacks of an extraordinary library turned inside out for an evening.
This Corridor is presented with the generous support of San Francisco Cinematheque as part of its Expanded Cinema series, Instituo Camões, corporations and individual donors.

BOADIBA performing her own works
& poems of the late Haitian poet PAUL LARAQUE
4:30 pm @ the Poetry Center
HUM 512, SFSU, free
• Boadiba, Haitian poet long resident in the Bay Area, has at last had her work collected into a book, new from Ishmael Reed Publishing Company. Under Burning White Sky collects 25 years of poetry, seeringly honest poems that reflect the author’s deep knowledge of her Haitian heritage and experiences gained through many travels.
Boadiba is the co-translator, with Jack Hirschman and Paul Laraque, of Open Gate, the first major anthology of Haitian Creole poetry (Curbstone Press, 2001). Along with her own poems, she will also read from the works of the late Paul Laraque, Haitian Creole poet whose work appeared in the U.S. in the volume Camourade, translated by Jack Hirschman (Curbstone Press, 1988).
"Election night in Port Au Prince. Silence shot with electric sparks. A wedding cake house wrapped in the mantle of its shadowy lawns, its hedges of violets, its tall trees. In the gallery enclosed with decorative wrought iron, two little girls scream in unison, support for their respective presidential candidates. "Viva so-and-so!" screams one. "Viva such-and-such!" answers the other. They work each other up to a hypnotic pitch that makes their nannies fear the neighbors' ears. Picking the girls up and putting them in a basement room, they let them get drunk with political fervor. The older one with honey skin loves the black man, who, with his voice, put a spell on the workers and the poor of the capital. The younger one with skin of molasses loves the sophisticated dandy, the self-made millionaire backed by the white Americans.

Chris Abani reading from
Song for Night
Joe Meno reading from
Tender As Hellfire
and
Felicia Luna Lemus reading from
Like Son
all published by Akashic Books
Long before he established himself as an indie-publishing sensation with his hit novels Hairstyles of the Damned and The Boy Detective Fails, Joe Meno brought out his debut novel, Tender As Hellfire , with St. Martin's Press. Here, with a re-edited paperback edition, Meno limns a near-fantastical world of trailer park floozies, broken-down '76 Impalas, lost glass eyes, and the daily experiences of two boys trying to make sense of their random, sharp lives.
Chris Abani's new novella furthers his reputation as the most acclaimed young African writer today.
Part Inferno, part Paradise Lost, and part Sunjiata epic, Song for Night is the story of a West African boy soldier's lyrical, terrifying, yet beautiful journey through the nightmare landscape of a brutal war in search of his lost platoon. The reader is led by the voiceless protagonist who, as part of a land mine-clearing platoon, had his vocal chords cut; a move to keep these children from screaming when blown up, and thereby distracting the other minesweepers. Written in a ghostly voice, each chapter is headed by a line of the unique sign language these children invented. This book is unlike anything else ever written about an African war.
Chris Abani is a Nigerian poet and novelist and the author of The Virgin of Flames, Becoming Abigail (a New York Times Editors' Choice), and GraceLand (a selection of the Today Show Book Club; winner of the 2005 PEN/Hemingway Prize and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award). His other prizes include a PEN Freedom-to-Write Award, a Prince Claus Award, and a Lannan Literary Fellowship. He lives and teaches in California.
