Port Huron Project Reenactment (Angela Davis speech 8/2) & similar works

I'm still not sure what to make of it, beyond filing it under the banner of archive-fever, but in addition to a number of recent archival/art projects in the bay (Theory of Survival at the Lab and now at Yerba Buena, which I HIGHLY recommend - http://www.theoryofsurvival.com/ - the CCA storage container show, the Jonestown exhibit at MIssion17 -http://mission17.org/exhibits/JonestownHadAGarden.htm - etc etc), there have also been a number of 're-enactments', ranging from the re-staging (if that's the word) of several Kaprow happenings in LA, similar performance art "covers" in NY, and the like. Of course historical re-enactments are not new, nor are leftist historical 'legacy' tours (labor history walks in SF as part of Yerba Buena's Ground Scores exhibit, the Black Panther Legacy Tour, NY Radical History tour, the Counterpulse SF Bicycle Tours - http://www.shapingsf.org/biketours.html - etc etc), but I'm curious about the impulse to restage radical political and/or artistic "events" - Jeremy Deller's Battle of Orgreave being an exemplary project - http://www.channel4.com/fourdocs/archive/battle_of_orgreave.html - anyways... here are two local items of note: 1. Suki Bishop has most recently been published in Dirty Girls, Best Lesbian Erotica 2007, Painted Bride Quarterly, and Blithe House Quarterly. Christian Nagler is a fiction writer, translator, and performer. In 2005 he received his M.F.A. from Brown University. His work has appeared most often in the form of handmade artist's books. Recently, he has been performing with Anna Halprin's Sea Ranch Collective, and with Severine La Pan Vaux's Dance company in France, and translating the works of the Salvadoran philosopher and economist Alberto Masferrer. He teaches community art at San Francisco State and is working on a novel.

Mary Diaz is a San Francisco based artist, poet and performer. She most recently completed her MFA from the California College of the Arts. She has collaborated with dancers, actors and video artists on a myriad of projects and guerilla performances and her experimental play, Up in Arms: an Oratorio at Tense Borders starring Kevin Killian, was featured in this year's Poet's Theater Jamboree hosted by Small Press Traffic. She is currently teaching writing and math at San Quentin State prison, and finishing her thesis manuscript, Can't in Arms: Come Round

State of Exile is a new book of poetry by exiled Uruguayan poet and novelist Cristina Peri Rossi, translated by US political prisoner Marilyn Buck. Selections will be performed at La Pena, 3105 Shattuck Av, Berkeley on May 20th at 7 pm. Speakers and guest poets: Cherrie Moraga, Graciela Trevison, Mitsuye Yamada and Maisha Quint. $10 donation requested.
