After using this site actively for the first time today--posting materials related to the up coming translation events--I just want to thank Taylor for all the hard work he's put into constructing our online home. I also have some ideas, suggestions and questions concerning the ongoing construction of the site. I've posted these on the workbook page called "Website To-Do List," under Workbooks (above)--click on "For Website Users." The workbook page you'll find here is accessible so that anyone can emend the list (once you've signed up as a member), or add your own comments and concerns regarding this site. Once you've opened the page, contribute by clicking on "Edit." Then, after adding something to the page, scroll down and click "Submit." This is one way to maintain the site as a dynamic work in progress.

Discussion list subscriptions are now easier

All registered Nonsite users can now subscribe to the two discussion lists/web discussion boards directly from their user profile pages (i.e., the "My account" link).

Just click the "Mailing Lists" tab in your profile, or in the User Tools menu in the right sidebar, and you can choose which list(s) you'd like to get and set a password for yourself. You'll receive a confirmation email to the email address you used when you registered for the website, and that's all there is to it.

The email lists are fully integrated with the two discussion boards on the website, meaning you can post to the list and have your message and its replies appear on the web board -- or vice versa. In order to take full advantage of this, it's preferable that everyone who wants to participate in the web discussion boards also subscribe to the email lists. If you don't, you can still post on the website, but your messages will not be sent to the email list, thus decreasing the likelihood of people replying to you.

If you're worried about clogging up your inbox, go ahead and subscribe, then reply to the confirmation email. Once you do this, you can go back to your "Mailing Lists" options and set both lists to "nomail" just by clicking a button.

Any new site users registering after today will be automatically asked if they want to subscribe to the discussion lists when they first register.

Finally, if you're one of the few people who went ahead and subscribed to the lists using the old method, please go ahead and re-subscribe through your user profile now. You're actually still subscribed, and you'll get a message from the list software telling you exactly this. But this way both the website and the backend listserv software will know about your subscription.

1) Contacting other Nonsite users:

In response to Wendy Kramer's question over in the website discussion forum, I wanted to let folks know how to use the individual user contact form. I've added a link called "User List" in the "User tools" menu over on your right. This link will take you to a list of all registered site users.

If you follow the link to the user you want to contact, you'll arrive at that person's profile page. The top of this page should have a couple of tabs labeled "View," "Track" and "Contact." The View page is where you arrive by default, and gives you an overview of the person's profile. For right now, profiles are pretty basic -- eventually I'll get around to adding fields for location, fields of interest, membership in various working groups as those are formed, etc.

The "Track" tab will take you to a list of everything the person has posted to the site.

The "Contact" tab will take you to an email form that you can use to contact this user. Anonymous browsers don't have access to this form, so spam shouldn't be a huge issue. The form itself is also set up with a Captcha question to make sure a human user is accessing it.

In response to Wendy Kramer's post in the website forum, I've fixed (I think) one of the two issues she identified. I think I set the margins on the sidebars generously enough to stop the calendar from spilling over into the central text and content area, even for users who set their browsers to display text pretty large. However, if this formatting issue is still a problem for you, let me know.

2 initial questions, whose answers might be standing in front of my bleary face but i worked a very long day at work: can i email individual members privately, and

how can i get the monthly calendar to stop spilling to the right into my email form layout.
