Bunker Archeology @ Marin Headlands 10/25

Start: 10/25/2008 - 12:00

End: 10/25/2008 - 14:00

Timezone: US/Pacific

as part of the Virilio symposium:
http://www.trajectoriesofthecatastrophic.net/

City Lights Booksellers & Publishers present
inconjunction with the Consulate General of France in San Francisco
and the generous assitance of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area

An event coinciding with the weekend long symposium:

Trajectories of the Catastrophic:
A Critical Appraisal of the Work of Paul Virilio

Paul Virilio's classic volume Bunker Archeology is evoked as GGNRA
Docent John Arturo Martini and East Bay artist John Colle Rogers give a
presentation at the Battery Townsley bunker. John Martini shall take you on a labyrinths tour, exploring Townsley's origins, discussing local military history, architecture, and geography. He will be followed by John Rogers, presenting a slide show/lecture with references to Paul Virilio's classic work: Bunker Archeology. The slide show will include images of military structures photographed by Virilio, delving into the author’s appreciation of these imposing structures. Rogers will address the relationship of such fortifications to such early writings as Popular Defense and Ecological Struggle, War and Cinema, and Pure War. These structures exist today as rich metaphorical evidence of our tendency to sculpt our environment and extend the will, as well as having a rich utilitarian beauty heightened by their obsolescence.

The tour shall be given twice. Admission is free, but requires making reservations. Admittance shall be on a "first come, first serve" basis. We request that attendees sign up either at the front counter at City Lights or by e-mailing their reservation to: info@trajectoriesofthecatastrophic.net. Please include your name, phone number, and number of persons attending. Details on how to reach the site will be e-mailed to you in the form of a pdf file or you may pick up a map provided at the front counter at City Lights Bookstore, 261 Columbus Avenue, San Francisco, CA. 94133

This Sat 10/4: Syndicate Tour of SF Labor History

http://www.ban5.org/YBCA/events/1050/detail.rol

From the city-wide cable car strike of 1907, Bloody Thursday (July 5, 1934) and the resulting general strike and march of 1934, to more recent alliances between union members and other activist movements, unions have been crucial in shaping the city of San Francisco. Syndicate will look at this history with a special focus on the role of union workers in visual and performing art spaces. In 1889, theatrical technicians in San Francisco formed an alliance with the Theatrical Mechanics Association in New York, and by 1892 Local 16 had been granted a charter with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, who are still active today in YBCA’s theater and forum and at most of San Francisco’s performance houses. In collaboration with the Labor Archives and Research Center, these artists have researched organized labor at nearby theaters and museums to create a series of sidewalk stenciled chalk paintings portraying active union members working or defending their rights. A podcast and map are provided for self-guided tours. Historian-and-artist-led walking tours of these venues will leave ybca at noon on July 26 and October 4. Reservations can be made at 415.978.2787. Audio can also be accessed by calling 415.294.3627.

Scamming in San Francisco and Buenos Aires

Start: 06/04/2008 - 19:00

End: 06/04/2008 - 20:00

Timezone: US/Pacific

Erick Lyle at Get Lost Travel Books
June 4 at 7 pm
1825 Market Street in San Francsico
(betwn Valencia and Guerrero)

Erick Lyle's Scam 'zine is a classic. Documenting
squats and anti-war protests, creating art and music projects, Lyle
and his friends were definitely not passive observers of San
Francisco's recent history. With the publication of his book, "On the
Lower Frequencies: A Secret History of the City," Lyle's writings are
now collected and accessible. In his latest Scam #6, "In the Streets
of Buenos Aires" Lyle hangs out with and introduces us to some of the
best stencil and graffiti artists in Buenos Aires. At Get Lost, he'll
read from his book and Scam #6, and show images of some of Buenos
Aires' stencil art.

Erick Lyle started writing in the 1990s, though I only first heard of
him when I read his brilliant zine, Scam # 5 ½, "Hunt's Donuts, the
Epicenter of Crime." In just a few pages, Lyle brilliantly
historicized the old donut shop with the "Open 25 Hours" sign at the
corner of Mission and 20th Streets. From Mission Street's 1940s
hey-day to its economic decline around the time Mission Street was
torn up to lay the BART tracks, Hunt's fortune's followed that of the
street. By the time it closed, Hunt's, straddling the border between
the Norteño and Sureño gangs, was known more for petty crime than
donuts. Not only was his writing sharp and concise, but Lyle's
memories of hanging out at Hunt's was part of his history of Mission
Street. After Scam #5 ½, I read a couple older editions of Scam. What
became clear is that Lyle has a talent for making history while being
able to chronicle it. Whether in response to the dot-com boom, the
lead up to the Iraq invasion in 2003, or other events that affected
the life on the streets of San Francisco, Lyle and his friends
challenged the powers that be while creatively engaging with people on
the street. Lyle's writings are now collected in On the Lower

Wednesday October 3rd at 7pm; at San Jose City Hall, Council Chambers, for a talk given by James Powderly and Evan Roth of the Graffiti Research Lab.

The G.R.L. has embarked on a mission: to revolutionize tools and languages of urban artists with cheap technology and open knowledge. The lab is dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists and protesters with open source tools for urban communication. The goal of the G.R.L. is to technologically empower individuals to creatively alter and reclaim their surroundings from commercial and corporate culture. G.R.L. agents are currently working in the lab and in the field to develop and test a range of experimental technologies for the state-of-the-art graffiti writer. Their website documents those efforts with video documentation and DIY instructions for each project. http://graffitiresearchlab.com

Kerry James Marshall @ San Francisco Art Institute

Start: 09/26/2007 - 19:30

Timezone: Etc/GMT-7

Wednesday, 26 September at 7:30pm
Lecture Hall
800 Chestnut Street campus
Free and open to the public

Through a variety of media, Kerry James Marshall addresses the social and political implications of African American popular culture. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Marshall utilizes imagery associated with these historic sites of activism—in particular, from the Civil Rights movement and the Watts Riots. He depicts middle-class living rooms, suburban backyards, ordinary folk, and political icons. His ongoing comic strip, Rythm Mastr, follows the adventures of an inner-city African American superhero. Marshall’s work has been exhibited at the 2003 Venice Biennale; the 1999–2000 Carnegie International; the 1997 Whitney Biennial; and Documenta X and XII in Kassel. In 1998, Marshall’s work was the subject of a major exhibition, which traveled to such venues as the Brooklyn Museum of Art; SFMoMA; and the Institute for Contemporary Art in Boston. He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1997. He teaches at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

This lecture has been generously funded by the Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation.
